Support Groups

One of the most effective ways of dealing with depression and other mental illnesses is by building a strong support system for yourself. These groups provide hope, support, and help to better educate and inform yourself about mental illness. The groups offer peer support, videos, guest speakers, discussion, etc. The overall goal is to enhance the general
well-being of members, to improve their quality of life, to empower them to speak for themselves, and to enable them to work more effectively with health professionals, agencies and groups in the community.

The following groups are available through the Canadian Mental Health Association, Fredericton/Oromocto Region, Inc:

Depression Support Group
Support group for people who have been clinically diagnosed with Depression or Manic Depression (Bipolar). Pre-registration is required prior to attending the meeting. Meetings will be twice a month
from 7:00 pm until 8:30 pm. Please call ahead for location. Contact Us

Meeting Dates: 

1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month @ 7:00

January 6 - Dr. Bhargava will be the guest speaker (Dr. Bhargava is a psychiatrist at the Fredericton Mental Health Centre).  This session is open to anyone interested in depression.

Friends and Family of the Mentally Ill Support Group
A support group for families or friends of a person with a mental illness. The group meets the twice a month. There are no meetings held during the summer months or on holiday Mondays. Meetings will be held in the R.E.A.C.H. Activity Room on the ground floor of the Victoria Health Center - 65 Brunswick St.

The group meets the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month at 7:30pm.

The Friends and Family Support Group is due to start meetings again after the summer break.

January 25  Guest speaker - Donna Chauvin, pharmacist

February 8

February 22 - Meeting will be held at 7:00p instead of 7:30p. Will be watching the movie 'Canvas' - a family's journey with mental illness.

March 8 - Guest speaker will be Jean McBrine from the Canadian Mental Health Association Fredericton/Oromocto branch.  Her topic will be 'Suicide Awareness'

Suicide Bereavement Support Group
For persons who have suffered a loss due to suicide.  Six week programs are offers throughout the year based on need. Information and support are available by calling or emailing the Canadian Mental Health Association Fredericton/Oromocto Region, Inc. office.

There is a 4-week Suicide Bereavement Session which will start on Oct. 8, 2009 at 7:00 and will be held here in Fredericton.  This course is offered to persons who have lost someone through suicide.
